DUSHANBE, Tajikistan, January 10. Tajikistan has set its sights on boosting its hydroelectric capacity to a whopping 10,951 megawatts (MW) by the year 2040, Trend reports via the country's Ministry of Energy and Water Resources.

This target is a cog in the wheel of the National Water Strategy, which got the green light from the government in November 2024 and lays out the game plan to boost the country’s water supply and energy infrastructure.

Currently, the installed capacity of Tajikistan’s hydroelectric power plants stands at 5,403 MW, which meets the country’s existing electricity demand based on its current water resources used for power generation. However, with an expected rise in electricity demand by 2040, the government has identified the need for significant expansion in hydroelectric power generation.

The ministry asserts that the anticipated augmentation in hydroelectric capacity will not merely bolster Tajikistan's energy autonomy but will also amplify its standing within the regional electricity marketplace.

In addition, the ministry emphasized that the influx of investments, advancements in industrial development, and improvements to the population's quality of life will result from the steady and dependable energy supply made possible by the fast expansion of hydroelectric power generation.

Over the past five years, Tajikistan has seen a steady increase in electricity production, with output rising from 20.7 billion kWh in 2019 to 22.5 billion kWh in 2024, which is an 8.7 percent increase. Export figures have also grown, from 2.4 billion kWh in 2019 to 3.7 billion kWh in 2024.
