BAKU, Azerbaijan, March 27. Iran's steel production potential stands at 50 million tons annually, yet the country is not fully capitalizing on this capacity, Bahram Sobhani, chairman of the Iranian Steel Producers Association (ISPA), told reporters, Trend reports.
"In the past Iranian year (from March 20, 2024, through March 20, 2025), around 30 million tons of steel were produced in the country, with more than 20 million tons of potential left untapped. As a result, Iran ranked 10th globally in steel production," he said.
Sobhani added that if Iran had added 10 million more tons to its production, the total would have reached 40 million tons, improving the country's global position to 6th place.
"The main issue in steel production can be attributed to the country's energy shortage. Gas and electricity shortages, along with energy limitations to factories, have led to a decrease in steel production. In the previous year (from March 21, 2023, through March 19, 2024), the country produced 32 million tons of steel, indicating a decline in production," he added.
