BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 30. The Araz Corridor, which will connect Azerbaijan's East Zangezur region with the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic and pass through Iranian territory, will contribute significantly to the economic development of the region, the governor of Iran's East Azerbaijan Province, Bahram Sarmast, told Trend.
In his statement to our agency, Sarmast emphasized that the corridor will lead to an increase in transportation, freight movement, and trade in the area.
Sarmast further stated that the East Azerbaijan province government is closely monitoring the activation and operation of the corridor. He highlighted the importance of key projects, including the launch of the Kelaleh-Aghband terminal, followed by the upcoming opening of the Julfa terminal.
Construction is underway on a 374-meter-long, 27.6-meter-wide automobile bridge spanning the Araz River between Iran and Azerbaijan. The bridge will include 4 traffic lanes, 2 safety lanes, a central divider, and 2.8-meter-wide pedestrian sidewalks on both sides.
The Kelaleh-Aghband automobile bridge is scheduled to become operational from January 21 through February 19, 2026.
