BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 1. The State Trading Company of Iran is trying to fully support itself by increasing the annual volume of wheat purchased from farmers to 12 million tons, Sohrab Sohrabi from the country's Ministry of Agriculture said, Trend reports.
According to Sohrabi, Iran's yearly wheat usage is 12 million tons, with ten million tons utilized by bakers, and two million tons used to make baguette bread.
He stated that the country's Ministry of Agriculture intends to boost wheat production rather than cultivating more land by protecting existing agricultural sites and implementing a number of technical initiatives.
The official also stated that initiatives have been conducted to improve production in the country for over two years.
Note that in the current planting year (September 23, 2023 through September 21, 2024), Iran plans to grow wheat on 5.9 million hectares of land and harvest at least 14 million tons of wheat.
In the preceding season (March 28 to October 22, 2023), over 10.4 million tons of wheat worth 1.56 quadrillion rials (about $37.1 billion) were acquired from Iranian farmers, representing a 44 percent increase over the previous season.
