BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 9. Transit cargo through Iran has increased by 22.5 percent in the past Iranian year (from March 20, 2024, through March 20, 2025) compared to the previous year (from March 21, 2023, through March 19, 2024), said Foroud Askari, Deputy Minister of Economic Affairs and Finance of Iran and head of the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration (IRICA), Trend reports.
Speaking to local media, Askari stated that during the last Iranian year, a total of 21.9 million tons of cargo was transited through Iran.
He added that approximately 19.7 million tons of this cargo passed through ten of Iran's customs points, including Shahid Rajai, Parvizkhan, Bashmaq, Sarakhs, Bazargan, Astara, Piranshahr, Bilasuvar, Lotfabad, and Julfa.
The customs official further noted that the most significant increases in cargo transit were observed at the Sarakhs, Piranshahr, and Lotfabad customs, with growth rates of 148 percent, 65 percent, and 58 percent, respectively.
Iran is located on a number of international transit routes (North-South international corridor, East-West international corridor). Nevertheless, the infrastructure on the trajectory of these routes passing through the country is fully lacking, the territory of Iran is not considered a safe route for international freight companies, and international sanctions have been imposed against this country. Based on this, international companies are not interested in transit through Iran.
