Azerbaijan crunches numbers on amount of imported food

BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 16. Azerbaijan's food imports increased by 9.05 percent ($111.4 million) in value terms to $1.3 billion from January through June 2024, Trend reports.

According to the State Customs Committee of Azerbaijan, the country imported 30,720 tons of meat (26.52 percent growth) worth $68.5 million (46.02 percent growth), 7,900 tons of milk (11.82 percent growth) worth $12.6 million (14.86 percent reduction) in the reporting period, 16,050 tons of dairy products (up 64.71 percent) worth $85.3 million (up 57.71 percent), 234,390 tons of fruits and vegetables (up 18.26 percent) worth $171.8 million (up 29.51 percent), and 8,340 tons of tea (up 15.53 percent) worth $42.9 million (up 31.18 percent).

Furthermore, Azerbaijan imported more than 568,270 tons of wheat, corn, and rice worth more than $168.1 million.

Imports of vegetable fats and oils amounted to 100,370 tons worth more than $119.8 million.

Meanwhile, Azerbaijan's foreign trade turnover from January through July 2024 decreased by 11.34 percent, or $3.4 billion, compared to the same period in 2023 (from $30.3 billion to $26.8 billion).

Exports accounted for $16 billion in the structure of foreign trade turnover, which was down $4.678 billion, or 22.52 percent, from the same period last year. The share of exports in the foreign trade turnover amounted to 59.86 percent, up from 68.5 percent a year earlier.

In the reporting period, Azerbaijan's imports increased year-on-year by $1.2 billion, or 12.94 percent, from $9.5 billion to about $10.7 billion. The share of imports in the foreign trade turnover amounted to 40.14 percent, up from 31.5 percent a year earlier.

Consequently, the foreign trade balance, while remaining positive during the review period, declined year-on-year by over $5.9 billion, or 52.71 percent, to $5.3 billion versus $11.2 billion in the 2023 reporting period.
