BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 7. NovaWind Kyrgyzstan, part of Russia's Rosatom, and the Russian-Kyrgyz Development Fund signed an agreement to advance an investment project for a wind power plant in Kyrgyzstan's Issyk-Kul region.
This was announced in a statement published by Rosatom Renewables following the 8th Kyrgyz-Russian Economic Forum, which took place in Bosteri, Issyk-Kul Region on August 6.
"The agreement is part of the project to build Rosatom's first wind farm in Kyrgyzstan," NovaWind Kyrgyzstan CEO Dmitry Andreyev said.
According to the statement, the agreement provides for work on the development and implementation of the project, as well as the subsequent operation of the wind power plant.
Russian-Kyrgyz Development Fund Chairman Artem Novikov said the fund considers renewable energy an important area for strengthening Kyrgyzstan's energy security, attracting investment and expanding industrial cooperation between Kyrgyzstan and Russia.
Meanwhile, Kyrgyzstan's electricity generation is dominated by hydropower, which accounts for the bulk of the country's power output. The government has therefore been seeking to diversify the country's energy mix by attracting investment into solar, wind and other renewable projects, alongside efforts to expand existing hydropower capacity.
The push for additional generation has become more important as Kyrgyzstan's electricity consumption continues to rise. The country has also been working to modernize its power infrastructure and attract foreign investors to new generation projects, while regional initiatives such as the Central Asia–South Asia electricity transmission project (CASA-1000) are aimed at improving the wider region's electricity connectivity. In this context, wind generation in Issyk-Kul could add a non-hydropower source to Kyrgyzstan's energy system and help reduce pressure on the country's predominantly hydro-based electricity supply.
