BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 11. The Galkynysh gas field in Turkmenistan possesses significant potential for expanding production, Business Development Manager at Gaffney Cline & Associates, Tim Davis told Trend at the Turkmenistan Investment Forum (TIF 2024) in Ashgabat.
"Covering an area of 4.000 square kilometers and located 350 kilometers east of Ashgabat, Galkynysh is one of the world's largest dry gas fields. Despite having 69 production wells drilled in the first phase, they cover only a small portion of the field. Large areas remain unexplored, presenting significant opportunities for further development," Davis said.
According to Davis, the field is ripe for the picking when it comes to ramping up production volumes, thanks to the substantial thickness of the reservoir layers and the chance of striking new reserves.
"Carbonate reservoir strata exceeds 580 meters thick. This thick layer means more gas volumes may be in the reservoirs. The field's closing area is still undefined, thus new data may reveal more gas. Gas reserves are estimated at 14–21 trillion cubic meters," he added.
Davis also underscored the significance of the neighboring Yashlar and Garakol fields for the future gas production boom in the area.
"It is expected that the adjacent Yashlar and Garakol fields will contribute to further growth in gas production. Both fields have similar geological characteristics, including high gas saturation in carbonate reservoirs, which enhances the long-term production prospects in the region," he noted.
The Business Development Manager revealed that Gaffney Cline & Associates, in collaboration with the Turkmen Scientific Research Institute of Natural Gas, has conducted geological studies to forecast seven phases of field development. Currently, only the first and second phases have been completed, while phases two through four are under discussion with international investors.
With these future phases and associated discoveries, "Galkynysh" could become an even more significant contributor to Turkmenistan's energy sector, with gas production in the field projected to continue for the next 50 years.

The Turkmenistan Investment Forum (TIF 2024) is taking place in Ashgabat from September 10 to 11 and serves as a crucial platform for attracting investments into the country's economy. The forum is organized by the Ministry of Finance and Economy, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Turkmenistan. It features representatives from leading international companies and organizations, focusing on attracting investment in the hydrocarbon sector, the TAPI project, gas chemistry, electricity, construction, and transportation.
The program includes thematic sessions with experts from specialized UN institutions, S&P Global Commodity Insights, and the World Trade Organization, as well as an exhibition of economic achievements.
