ASTANA, Kazakhstan, April 15. Kazatomprom, the National Atomic Company of Kazakhstan, and the Czech company ČEZ a.s. have signed a contract for the supply of Kazakhstan’s natural uranium concentrate to fuel nuclear power plants in the Czech Republic, Trend reports.
“This agreement represents a significant expansion of Kazatomprom’s presence in Europe and strengthens the company’s position in the global uranium market. Over the next seven years, the supply of Kazakh uranium will cover about one-third of the uranium required for manufacturing Westinghouse fuel assemblies used at the Temelin Nuclear Power Plant. This will enhance the energy security of the Czech Republic and bolster the role of nuclear power in providing the country with clean and sustainable electricity,” said Kazatomprom in its statement.
The official signing ceremony took place at ČEZ a.s.’s headquarters in Prague. This agreement is a natural continuation of Kazatomprom’s global strategic partnership efforts, aimed at diversifying its sales channels.
“With this agreement, Kazatomprom continues to expand its presence in Europe and reinforce its strategy of diversifying its sales portfolio,” said Vladislav Bayguzhin, Chief Commercial Officer of Kazatomprom.
Bogdan Zronek, a member of the ČEZ a.s. Board of Directors and Chief Director of the Nuclear Energy Division, emphasized that the partnership with Kazatomprom diversifies the company’s supplier base and is strategically significant for both ČEZ and the Czech Republic.
“It ensures a stable and reliable fuel source for our nuclear plants, which is critical for meeting our energy needs and fulfilling our decarbonization plan (VIZE 2030) to achieve carbon neutrality,” he added.
ČEZ a.s. is the leading energy company in Central Europe, playing a key role in nuclear energy. The company operates six nuclear reactors at two sites - Dukovany and Temelin - that together provide about 36 percent of the Czech Republic's electricity needs. In addition to nuclear power, ČEZ supplies a significant portion of the country's electricity, ensuring stable and reliable energy for the region.
Kazatomprom is the world’s largest producer of uranium, with its share accounting for about 21 percent of global primary uranium production in 2024. The company holds the largest uranium reserve base in the industry. Kazatomprom, together with its subsidiaries, affiliates, and joint ventures, is developing 27 deposits across 14 uranium mining enterprises.
