ASTANA, Kazakhstan, May 26. Delegations from Kazakhstan and China visited the Nur Zholy (Kazakhstan) - Khorgos (China) border crossing points, inspected the infrastructure on both sides of the border, and reviewed the conditions of operation of border facilities and development of the Middle Corridor, Trend reports via the Committee of State Revenues of Kazakhstan.
The Kazakh side was headed by Zhandos Duisembiev, Chairman of the Committee of State Revenues, and the Chinese side by Sun Meijun, Minister of the General Administration of Customs.
The following agreements were reached:
Extension of the 24-hour operating mode of the border crossing points "Nur Zholy" – "Khorgos" until June 30, 2026;
Increase in the acceptance by the Chinese side of Kazakh vehicles: currently, up to 650 vehicles per day are accepted at the "Nur Zholy" crossing point; from July 1, this figure will increase to 750 vehicles, and in September, the Chinese side will accept up to 1000 vehicles per day. At the "Kalzhat" crossing point, the capacity has already increased from 130 to 250 vehicles per day. In June, this figure will be increased to 300 vehicles.
Launch of an additional mobile inspection and examination complex at the "Dulat" crossing point (China) by the end of May 2025;
Installation of a stationary inspection and examination complex at the "Khorgos" crossing point (China) by the end of September;
Mutual recognition of X-ray images from inspection complexes was agreed upon, which will reduce the time spent on repeated checks and speed up border crossing.
Plans to optimize the distribution of transport flows through the "Khorgos" International Transport and Logistics Center (ITLC), which will relieve the "Nur Zholy" crossing point and ensure a more even distribution of transport flows.
Issues of expanding the number of traffic lanes and the border bridge at the "Nur Zholy" – "Khorgos" crossing points were considered by both sides.
Agreement to hold monthly meetings at the level of border customs services and quarterly meetings of coordinators of Kazakh-Chinese customs authorities.
Moreover, it is noted that the trip was organized to implement the instructions of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and to address the problem of large queues in the direction of China. The agreement on joint inspections was reached on May 21-22, 2025, at a meeting of the heads of customs services of Central Asia and China.
Kazakhstan’s capacity at the border with China increased in 2023 from 202,000 to 429,000 vehicles (112 percent), in 2024 from 429,000 to 734,000 vehicles (71 percent), and in the first four months of 2025, 238,500 vehicles were processed, an increase of 41 percent.
