BAKU, Azerbaijan, December 27. The National Bank of Georgia (NBG) and the China International Payments System (CIPS) are planning to deepen cooperation on payment system integration, with a focus on expanding Georgian banks’ direct participation in CIPS, Trend reports via the NBG.

During an online meeting between NBG President Natia Turnava and CIPS President Fu Huang, the sides discussed future steps aimed at strengthening collaboration beyond the progress made in 2025. A key priority outlined was the continuation of work on reviewing applications from Georgian commercial banks seeking direct membership in CIPS, a process that began for the first time this year.

CIPS expressed readiness to further cooperate with the National Bank on payment system convergence and to expand engagement with Georgian commercial banks in various areas in the coming year. The plans include enabling more Georgian banks to move from indirect to direct participation in the system, reducing intermediaries in renminbi transactions.

According to the NBG, deeper integration into CIPS is expected to diversify cross-border payment instruments used by Georgian financial institutions and support the expanding trade and tourism ties between Georgia and China.
