ASTANA, Kazakhstan, September 10. Kazakhstan's KEGOC (Kazakhstan Electricity Grid Operating Company) and Hitachi Energy have signed a memorandum of cooperation, the company told Trend.
The memorandum covers a whole host of collaborative efforts, such as laying the groundwork for electrical network development, delving into high-voltage power transmission technologies, exploring Smart Grid technologies, incorporating renewable energy sources into the power system, introducing digital substations, and sharing knowledge and training personnel.
"The signing of the memorandum is the result of previously held meetings between our companies to explore areas of cooperation. I am confident that Hitachi’s extensive experience in implementing energy projects, in particular the supply of modern solutions and technologies, will be useful for KEGOC in implementing promising projects to increase network capacity and other projects for the country’s energy transition while maintaining the stability of the energy system," said KEGOC's Chairman of Management Board Nabi Aitzhanov, commenting on the signing of the memorandum.
Meanwhile, in 2023, electricity production in Kazakhstan hit the whopping 112.8 billion kWh mark. During this period, the nation saw a surge in electricity imports, totaling a whopping 3.4 billion kWh. On the flip side, exports were no slouch either, reaching a respectable 1.4 billion kWh.
At the same time, in 2023, the volume of electricity consumption was at the level of 115 billion kWh (in 2022, 112.9 billion kWh).
The nation now boasts 220 power plants, of which 144 are renewable energy facilities with a combined capacity of 2.8 GW. Generally speaking, the capacity was 20.4 GW overall as of January 1, 2024, and the highest usage for the current autumn-winter season was 16.6 GW.
