BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 24. Transit through Iran has increased by 50 percent during six months of the current Iranian year (from March 20 through September 21, 2024) compared to the same period of last year (from March 21 through September 22, 2023), Iran's Deputy Minister of Economy and Finance and Director General of Customs Administration Mohammad Rezvanifar told reporters, Trend reports.
According to him, 11.5 million tons of cargo have been transported through Iran over the past six months.
The official noted that 66 percent of the cargo was transported through three customs offices in Iran (Parviz Khan, Shahid Rajaee, and Bashmaq). Thus, 3.1 million tons of cargo were transported through Parviz Khan Customs, 2.9 million tons through Shahid Rajaee Port Customs, and 1.6 million tons through Bashmaq Customs.
Rezvanifar added that transit through Parviz Khan customs increased by 128 percent through customs at Shahid Rajaee Port by 18 percent and through Bashmaq customs by 105 percent in six months compared to the same period of last year.
The official stated that Sarakhs, Bazargan, Piranshahr, Bileh Savar, Jolfa, Astara, and Lotfabad customs have taken the next positions in transit through Iran for six months.
To note, Iran is located on several international transit routes (North-South International Corridor, East-West International Corridor). Nevertheless, the infrastructure on the trajectory of these routes passing through the country is fully insufficient, the territory of Iran is not considered a safe route for international freight companies, and international sanctions have been imposed against this country. Based on this, global companies are not interested in transit through Iran.
