BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 12. The merging of gas networks between Iran and Russia can play a strategic role in the regional and global energy supply, Iran's Deputy Oil Minister, CEO of the National Iranian Gas Company (NGIC) Saeed Tavakkoli told reporters, Trend reports.
According to him, Russia and Iran are the countries with the first and second largest gas reserves in the world, while the cooperation between these two countries can contribute significantly to energy field in the region and globally.
Tavakkoli said that Iran is currently the sole gas supplier to Iraq, ranks among the main countries meeting Türkiye's gas demand, and intends to develop gas trade with both countries.
The deputy minister mentioned that Iran has the potential to produce over one billion cubic meters of gas daily and also has the capacity to export gas to regional countries.
"Iran's geographical position in the North-South Energy Corridor is of great importance. By cooperating with countries like Russia, Iran is ready to implement multilateral gas agreements and engage in gas swaps. The goal of the North-South Energy Corridor is to connect countries such as Türkiye, Iraq, Pakistan, India, and those located in the southern part of the Persian Gulf," he emphasized.
To note, on June 26, a document regarding the transportation of Russian gas to Iran was signed between CEO of NGIC Majid Chegini and his counterpart from Russian Gazprom Alexey Miller. Russian gas will be transported to Iran via the Caspian Sea bed. The 30-year agreement signed between the two companies envisages transportation of 300 million cubic meters of gas daily from Russia to Iran.
