BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 15. In the first quarter of 2025, the volume of goods shipped by sea in Azerbaijan hit the high seas at 2.2 million tons.
Data obtained by Trend from the State Statistics Committee indicates that the volume of freight transported by sea increased by 14.2 percent compared to the same period last year. Oil cargo made up 46.8 percent of the total.
Sea ports carried out 3.5 million tons of loading and unloading operations, of which 2.9 million tons, or 82.7 percent, were transit cargo. As of April 1, 2025, the volume of cargo remaining at the ports was 178,000 tons. During the period, the number of passengers transported by sea decreased by 4.8 percent compared to the same period in 2024, totaling 5,900 people.
To note, cargo and passenger transportation in Azerbaijan from January through March 2025 increased by 2.3 percent and 4.2 percent, respectively, compared to the same period of the previous year. Economic entities operating in the transport sector transported 55.9 million tons of cargo. Of this, 4 percent was transported by sea, 7.7 percent by railway, 0.2 percent by air, 58.1 percent by road, and 30.0 percent by pipeline.
The volume of cargo transported by vehicles belonging to the non-state sector increased by 3.8 percent, with this sector accounting for 77.4 percent of total cargo transported. In January–March 2025, transport companies served 472.1 million passengers. Of these, 88.2 percent used road transport, 11.2 percent used the metro, and the rest were transported by other means of transport.
