BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 6. Construction progress on Ro-Pax and Tanker type vessels at Baku Shipyard LLC, a subsidiary of Azerbaijan’s Transport and Communications Holding (AZCON), has seen notable increases in the first quarter of 2025, Trend reports via AZCON.
The shipyard reported a dramatic rise in the construction of Ro-Pax vessels, with progress surging from just over 17.52 percent in the same period last year to more than 56.32 percent in the first quarter of this year.
Similarly, the construction of Tanker vessels showed a substantial improvement, jumping from 17.89 percent to nearly 67 percent compared to the first quarter of 2024.
As to the meaning, Ro-Pax (Roll-On/Roll-Off Passenger) vessels are hybrid ships engineered to transport both vehicles and passengers. These vessels feature cargo decks for cars and are furnished with cabins and amenities for passenger accommodation, rendering them suitable for short-to-medium-distance ferry routes. Ro-Pax vessels are extensively utilized in regions with a requirement for simultaneous passenger and car transportation, particularly on routes connecting adjacent countries or islands.
Baku Shipyard (BSY), founded in 2011, aims to deliver shipbuilding and repair services for the marine and offshore sectors in the Caspian Region, operating under the laws of the Republic of Azerbaijan. It was established by the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR), Azerbaijan Investment Company (AIC), and Keppel Offshore Marine (KOM) and has developed the most advanced shipbuilding and repair facility in the Caspian Sea. The primary operation of the Baku Shipyard is the construction of diverse vessels, including offshore support vessels, general cargo vessels, tugboats, crane vessels, specialty vessels, passenger vessels, and tankers. The yard also engages in ship repair and conversion of vessels.
