BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 10. The Magtymguly gas field in Turkmenistan's Caspian Sea sector has produced more than 1.3 million cubic meters of commercial natural gas per day from a new well.
This was announced in a report published by the Turkmennebit State Concern on August 10.
According to the report, the A8 production well also produces around 130 tons of gas condensate per day. The well was drilled to a depth of 4,981 meters on the Toplum-1 contract area. Its initial development is ongoing, with production expected to increase at a later stage.
The work is being carried out under a production sharing agreement between Malaysia's PETRONAS Carigali Sdn. Bhd. and Turkmennebit.
“The work places particular emphasis on international cooperation in developing licensed offshore blocks in the Turkmen sector of the Caspian Sea,” the report said.
Turkmennebit added that over the past 30 years, five offshore platforms have been built and around 40 exploration, appraisal and production wells have been drilled in Turkmenistan's Caspian sector and coastal area.
Joint operations in the area have resulted in the production of more than 44 billion cubic meters of gas and 16 million tons of liquid hydrocarbons.
The next stage of cooperation includes the development of offshore blocks No. 19 and 20, as well as 2D seismic surveys on blocks No. 11, 12, 13 and 14, the report noted.
Meanwhile, Turkmenistan's offshore Caspian sector has become an important part of the country's efforts to expand and diversify its hydrocarbon production base. Unlike the country's giant onshore gas fields, offshore projects work under cooperation with international partners and production-sharing agreements, making foreign investment and technology particularly important for developing more technically complex resources.
Malaysia's PETRONAS has been one of Turkmenistan's longest-standing offshore partners. The company has operated in the country for 30 years and has been involved in hydrocarbon production in the Turkmen sector of the Caspian Sea, including the development of offshore infrastructure and the Kiyanly gas processing plant and terminal.
The partnership entered a new phase in June 2026, when PETRONAS signed a production sharing agreement covering offshore Blocks 19 and 20 and a cooperation agreement on 2D seismic studies in northern offshore blocks. PETRONAS said the new agreements are intended to expand its upstream portfolio, improve understanding of the subsurface and identify future exploration opportunities.
