BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 17. Iran is set to allocate 20 trillion rials (about $34.8 million) for the construction of a new factory for locomotive and wagon production in the Besat Industrial Park, located in the East Azerbaijan Province in the country’s northwest, Sabir Parnian, the head of the province's Organization of Industry, Mining, and Trade, told journalists, Trend reports.
According to Parnian, the plant will have the capacity to produce 1,500 wagons — including both passenger and freight cars — and 100 locomotives per year once operational.
Parnian stated that around 900 people are expected to be employed at the plant once it reaches full capacity.
“Given the importance of the railway industry within the framework of parallel national development, this plant is considered a national project and will play a significant role in increasing domestic production of railway vehicles and advancing strategic infrastructure,” he said.
Iran’s rail network spans 14,984 kilometers and currently includes 993 locomotives, 29,950 freight wagons, and 2,178 passenger wagons.
