BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 10. Illegal actions of international cybercriminal networks against Azerbaijan are being prevented.

This was announced in a statement published by the press service of the State Security Service (SSS).

According to the statement, recently, numerous violations of the law by organized cybercriminal groups operating outside the borders of Azerbaijan, targeting civil servants, as well as employees of various enterprises and organizations, by creating fake social network and instant messaging accounts using numbers belonging to Azerbaijani mobile operators, have been recorded.

"These networks, led by foreign citizens, massively obtain contact numbers of employees from the official websites of state institutions, as well as enterprises and organizations, using special computer programs, and send supposedly 'urgent' WhatsApp messages to those numbers from fake accounts created using photos of the heads of the relevant institutions, and direct them to another fake account operating on behalf of law enforcement agencies, giving instructions to transfer funds to foreign accounts or other instructions.

Within the framework of operational-investigative measures initiated on the existing facts, some participants in the aforementioned criminal acts have been identified, and international legal procedural measures have been initiated against them.
In addition, comprehensive measures are being taken to fully expose members of the criminal network, together with the relevant authorities of foreign countries, as well as the security departments and platform operators of international technology companies to which the relevant social networks and platforms belong.

At a time when the development of information technologies is accompanied by wide opportunities for abuse, citizens of Azerbaijan should be vigilant against suspicious contacts established for criminal purposes through social networks and instant messaging platforms and inform state authorities promptly," the statement reads.
