BAKU, Azerbaijan, January 12. Iran plans to add a significant number of locomotives to its railway network over the next four years, the country's Deputy Minister of Roads and Urban Development and the CEO of the Railway Company, Jabar-Ali Zakeri, told reporters, Trend reports.

Zakeri explained that the plan includes importing hundreds of locomotives, with an estimated 400 units to be added to the country's railway fleet over the next four years.

In addition to these imports, the country also intends to repair damaged locomotives and increase domestic production of locomotives to further enhance its railway services.

Notably, Iran's railway network spans nearly 15,000 kilometers. The country currently operates 993 locomotives, nearly 30,000 freight cars, and over 2,000 passenger cars.

Furthermore, Iran produced nearly 2,000 railway vehicles, including locomotives, freight cars, and passenger cars in the first eight months of the current Iranian year (from March 20 through November 20, 2024).
