BAKU, Azerbaijan, March 4. The Iranian Railways Company has added a significant number of locomotives to its fleet over the past six months, the Deputy Minister for Roads and Urban Development of Iran, the Executive Director of Iranian Railway Company Jabbar Ali Zakeri said, Trend reports.
Addressing a press conference in Tehran today, Zakeri asserted that the number of locomotives in Iran has increased from 450 to 550 during the mentioned period.
He further added that currently, 16 percent of the existing locomotives are out of service for various reasons, with the average lifespan of locomotives in the country being 36 years.
The Deputy Minister also mentioned that next year, 22 new locomotives are expected to be put into operation.
The length of railway lines in Iran is 14,984 kilometers. A total of 993 locomotives, 29,950 freight cars, and 2,178 passenger wagons are operating on Iran's railroad lines.
