ASTANA, Kazakhstan, May 20. Trade turnover between Kazakhstan and Hungary increased by 37 percent in the first quarter of this year, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said during talks with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, Trend reports.
Greeting the Hungarian Prime Minister, President Tokayev spoke fondly of his state visit to Budapest last year, during which several strategically important agreements were signed.
According to him, the visit was highly productive both in terms of achieving practical agreements and in strengthening mutual understanding between Astana and Budapest.
Moreover, President Tokayev named trade, economic, and investment cooperation as priority areas on the bilateral agenda. In 2024, the volume of mutual trade reached nearly $200 million.
Hungarian investments in Kazakhstan’s economy have exceeded $370 million. Currently, the joint investment portfolio includes 16 projects worth about $700 million in areas such as engineering, agriculture, and logistics.
Highlighting the special significance of the upcoming informal summit of the Organization of Turkic States (OTS), Kassym-Jomart Tokayev reaffirmed Kazakhstan’s commitment to constructive dialogue across all key areas of the organization’s activity.
Meanwhile, Viktor Orbán thanked the President for his visit and noted the steadily positive momentum in Kazakh-Hungarian relations.
He emphasized that in recent years, bilateral cooperation has been developing very dynamically, especially in the economic sphere, and expressed gratitude for the comprehensive support in organizing and hosting the OTS summit.
The meeting reviewed the progress of agreements reached during last year’s high-level talks, including joint projects in energy, trade, and investment. There was also an exchange of views on current international issues.
President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev is in Budapest to participate in the informal summit of the Organization of Turkic States.
This summit is notable for being the first in the OTS’s history to be hosted by an observer state, underscoring Hungary’s consistent role in deepening comprehensive cooperation with Turkic nations.
The informal summit, held under the motto “Meeting Point of East and West,” will offer a significant opportunity for the heads of state to advance cooperation in key areas and discuss shared regional and global issues.
