Commissioning of new hydro power plants (HPP) is not expected in Georgia in 2019, Trend reports referring to bizzone.info.
The construction of a number of HPP throughout Georgia has been suspended due to protests by the local population. Meanwhile, by 2021, when the country's largest Enguri hydroelectric power station closes for rehabilitation, Georgia faces a serious energy shortage.
According to power engineer Murman Margvelashvili, the vast majority of HPP construction projects is suspended for an indefinite period.
“This creates very serious problems. It is likely that the government will not be able to stop the Enguri hydroelectric power station, despite the fact that it needs urgent rehabilitation,“ he said.
At present, Georgia receives electricity from Azerbaijan; however, the possibilities of the neighboring country have certain limits, and in the case of growing demand the volume of Azerbaijani imports may not be enough.
“Currently, only one hydroelectric power station is actually under construction, which is in Shuhevi. The second project, the Nenskra hydroelectric power station, is only at the stage of preparation for construction, but it may not even start due to the protests,” said deputy of Georgian Parliament, power engineer Revaz Arveladze.
