BAKU, Azerbaijan, December 5. During the financial year from 1 October 2023 to 30 September 2024, Swiss energy giant Axpo significantly expanded its renewable energy portfolio by adding 303 megawatts (MW) of new capacity from wind and solar power plants, Trend reports via the company.
The additions include 214 MW from solar installations and 89 MW from wind projects, reinforcing Axpo’s commitment to the clean energy transition.
In Switzerland, Axpo’s subsidiary CKW contributed to the solar expansion by installing approximately 1,000 roof-mounted photovoltaic (PV) systems over the past year. Despite this progress, the development of large-scale Alpine PV plants has fallen short of expectations. Industry-wide challenges, including regulatory hurdles and economic viability concerns, have led to stagnation in project development.
While Alpine PV projects face hurdles, Axpo sees significant potential in wind energy, particularly as a reliable source of electricity during Switzerland’s cold winter months. According to Axpo’s "Model 2050" scenario, wind power could generate up to 10 terawatt hours (TWh) annually, a figure that could be even higher from a purely technical perspective.
To capitalize on this opportunity, Axpo has bolstered its wind power team in Switzerland and is actively assessing potential sites for new wind farms. The company aims to unlock the country’s untapped wind energy potential and contribute to a more sustainable and resilient energy system.
As Axpo continues to expand its renewable energy capacity, the company remains focused on overcoming regulatory and economic barriers to drive forward Switzerland’s clean energy ambitions.
