DUSHANBE, Tajikistan, July 31. Russia’s state nuclear energy corporation Rosatom will oversee the rehabilitation of two uranium legacy sites in Tajikistan’s Sughd region, Trend reports via Rosatom..
The Central Design and Technological Institute (CDTI), part of Rosatom’s fuel division, has signed a contract to develop the design and estimate documentation for cleaning up the sites. Specialists have already started comprehensive engineering and radiological assessments.
The Adrasman tailing dump, one of the sites, is located in mountainous terrain and spans 3.45 hectares, with a height of 22–25 meters and approximately 400,000 tons of accumulated radioactive waste. The second site, known as Dump No. 3, covers around 3 hectares and will be used to contain contaminated structures from former industrial facilities.
“Our team already has successful experience from a similar project at the Taboshar site. This expertise, developed jointly by Russian and Tajik specialists using global best practices, can serve as a foundation for future uranium legacy remediation projects,” said Yakov Nikonov, CDTI Director General.
