Kazakhstan’s Deputy Prime Minister Roman Sklyar spoke about the planned work to combat harmful emissions, Trend reports referring to Kazinform.
"Reducing the use of gas and petroleum products and the near-complete elimination of coal will also lead to significant reductions in emissions from the power industry. The remaining share of emissions will be absorbed through carbon capture and storage technologies, including future promising projects that are under development," Sklyar said.
"A slowdown in the growth of greenhouse gas emissions in agriculture is possible through the introduction of sustainable organic agriculture and forestation programs. Reducing emissions by 50 percent in the waste sector by 2060 (from 6.65 Mt CO2-eq in 2017 to 3.43 Mt CO2-eq in 2060) will be through measures to collect, sort, and recycle waste," he wrote in his response to an MP’s request.
According to him, both scenarios directly take into account the current international efforts to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees.
"The efforts include EU’s Green Deal, or the commitments of most countries to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, which will significantly reduce global demand for fossil fuels and industrial products with high greenhouse gas emissions,' the deputy PM noted. "Implementation of the carbon-neutral scenario will lead to a 97 percent reduction in emissions, which will allow reducing emissions by over 9.3 billion tons of CO2-eq for the entire period up to 2060 and require to invest $666.5 billion."
"At the same time, GDP growth by 2060 will increase by 50 percent in comparison with the baseline scenario," he added.
He reminded that the scenarios were developed through intensive consultations with stakeholders in 2020 and 2021.
"On October 13 this year, in the city of Nur-Sultan, within the participation of the country’s president [Kassym-Jomart Tokayev] in the International Conference on "Ways to achieve goals of Paris Agreement and carbon neutrality of Kazakhstan", it’s planned to present the results of the respective concept. The concept will also be presented to the international community at the 26th UN Conference on climate change in Glasgow (UK) on November 1-2 this year. In general, this issue is under the constant control of the government," concluded Sklyar.
