BAKU, Azerbaijan, December 7. The oil and gas swap between Iran and Russia can greatly help in strengthening the relations between the two countries, Spokesman for the Economic Commission of the Iranian Parliament Mehdi Toghyani told IRNA, Trend reports.
According to Toghyani, Iran can receive the gas needed for the northern regions of the country from Russia through the neighboring countries, and in return supply gas to the countries it intends to, such as Pakistan and India.
He also said that the energy sector is of special strategic importance for the world countries. Creating a safe transit route through swap is of great importance for Iran.
“In addition, the plan to transport gas through Iran to Pakistan and India was not realized due to the pressure of the US. The US knows that if the plan for gas transportation is realized, the mentioned two countries will have common interests with Iran in the energy field. If Russia intervenes in this matter, the plan to transport gas to Pakistan and India can be realized,” he noted.
Toghyani pointed out that both the National Iranian Oil Company and National Iranian Gas Company can supply gas to the northern regions of the country (Russian gas).
"With transportation of Russian gas to the north of the country, the gas pressure in these regions will not decrease in winter. Along with the swapping Russian gas, Iran can export the gas it transports to the north, to other states," he said.
The US imposed new sanctions on Iran in November 2018. Over the past period, the sanctions affected Iranian oil exports, more than 700 banks, companies, and individuals. The sanctions have resulted in the freezing of Iranian assets abroad.
