BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 13. Iran plans to capture the gas flared from four oil fields (Marun, Gachsaran, Aghajari, and Rag-Sefid) located east of the Karun River by March 19, 2024, Iranian Oil Minister Javad Owji told reporters after today’s meeting of the Cabinet of Iran in Tehran, Trend reports.
The minister noted that these fields produce 21 flares of gas along with oil. The volume of gas collected from the mentioned number of flares will be 6 million cubic meters per day on average. This is equal to the volume of gas produced daily by Iran from the South Pars gas field, which is the largest gas field in the world.
The collected gas will be processed at the Persian Gulf Bid-Boland Gas Refining Company and supplied as fuel or raw material to petrochemical companies for ethane production.
Owji also said that in general, there are 52 flares east of the Karun River in Iran, and the gas produced along with oil is burned at these flares.
He added that the Persian Gulf Bid-Boland Gas Refining Company has a capacity of 2 billion cubic feet (about 56.6 million cubic meters) of gas per day, but it is currently underutilized by 500–600 million cubic feet (about 14.2–17 million cubic meters) per day.
Reportedly, about 50 million cubic meters of flare gas are burned in Iran daily. Iran is currently collecting more than 20 million cubic meters of flare gas daily.
The South Pars gas field (called North Dome in Qatar) is a joint gas field between Iran and Qatar. The proven reserves of the South Pars Gas Field are estimated at 51 trillion cubic meters of gas, of which 36 trillion are extractable. Iran's share in the field is 14 trillion cubic meters of gas and 18 billion barrels of gas condensate.
On average, Iran produces 700 million cubic meters of gas per day from the South Pars gas field.
