DUSHANBE, Tajikistan, August 6. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) is sponsoring further modernization of the Golovnaya hydropower plant (HPP) in Tajikistan, Trend reports.

According to the ADB, the bank has approved an additional grant of $21 million to enhance renewable energy production in Tajikistan by upgrading the HPP.

This funding will be used to replace power generation Unit 4 at Golovnaya, which ceased operations in 2019 due to mechanical damage and was not included in the ADB’s original project approved in 2013.

According to ADB Director General for Central and West Asia Yevgeniy Zhukov, electricity from the Golovnaya hydropower plant is supplied to both national and regional grids, benefiting Tajikistan and its neighbors. ADB’s support strengthens regional energy security and contributes to inclusive, sustainable economic growth and balanced regional development.

The original ADB project provided a $136 million grant to replace five of the plant’s six power generation units. It also included the rehabilitation of switchyards at Golovnaya, modernization of the Vose substation, construction of the Rudaki substation, and a transmission line connecting the Rudaki and Vose substations in southern Tajikistan.
