The construction of infrastructure to connect Iranian and Azerbaijani power grids is nearly over and the facilities will come on stream by summer, Iran’s Deputy Energy Minister Hushang Falahatian said.
The construction of a new facility at the border with Azerbaijan is over and there remain only four relays which will be completed after agreements are made with Azerbaijan, Falahatian said, Mehr news agency reported November 1.
He said the facilities will enable the exchange of 100 to 200 megawatts of electricity between the two countries.
Iran has also held talks over grid synchronization with Russia and the two countries will be able to exchange power up to 500 megawatts via Azerbaijan, he noted.
Underlining that the connection will serve to link Iran’s power grid with Europe, Falahatian said Georgia is considered to become Iran’s second power link to Europe.
It has been planned that a power facility will be built at the Russian-Georgian border in two years, which will facilitate a connection to Russia via Georgia, he stated.
