Payment card turnover in Azerbaijan experiences notable uptick

BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 24. Azerbaijan's payment card turnover through ATMs and POS terminals in April 2024 increased by 3.6 billion manat ($2.1 billion), or 58.33 percent, from 6.3 billion manat ($3.7 billion) to 10 billion manat ($5.8 billion) over the year, Trend reports.

The Central Bank of Azerbaijan (CBA) reported 151.008 million payment card transactions, up 85.89 percent over the year, including 5.326 million foreign transactions totaling 259 million manat ($152.3 million).

Furthermore, the number of debit card transactions (both inside and outside the country) amounted to 138.372 million for 9.3 billion manat ($5.4 billion), of which 14.788 million transactions worth 3.3 billion manat ($1.9 billion) were made through ATMs inside the country and 43.084 million transactions worth 766 million manat ($450.6 million) were made through POS terminals inside the country.

Within and outside of the country, 12.636 million transactions worth 690 million manat ($405.8 million) were processed by clients using credit cards.

Meanwhile, 559,000 transactions worth 126 million manat ($74.1 million) were made through ATMs inside the country, while 6.157 billion transactions worth 175 million manat ($102.9 million) were made through POS terminals.

To note, the number of payment cards in Azerbaijan increased by 3.211 million, or 22.2 percent, as of May 1, 2024, compared to the same period last year and reached 17.676 million against 14.465 million a year earlier.
