An example of a Smart City system is an implemented pilot project on the basis of Azerbaijan’s Baku International Bus Terminal, Regional Director of the world famous CISCO company Vladimir Orlov said at a video conference, Trend reports.
Two important issues have been identified within this project, Orlov added.
“The first is the management of passenger flow while the second is the management of transport,” the regional director added. “Moreover, the management of transport must be organized taking into account many aspects as there are several types of transport on the territory of the bus terminal, namely, buses, taxis, private transport entering the bus terminal, buses running to other countries, which the management of the bus terminal has purchased. So, the transportation by all these modes of transport in this section must be properly organized.”
“The direction of passenger traffic is important not only in terms of passenger convenience or the operation of the bus terminal, but safety.
“The movement of passengers at the bus terminal is chaotic,” the regional director added. “During the implementation of the pilot project, together with Azerbaijani Minister of Transport, Communications and High Technologies Ramin Guluzade, we analyzed the options for improving the activity of the bus terminal. The most frequently analyzed issues were the safety of movement. People are moving against traffic, rather than along the pedestrian crossing, as the process has not been organized. There is not a single information board indicating the route and other points.”
“The main idea of the project is to centralize the management of all processes at the bus terminal,” Orlov added.
“Thanks to the intelligent system, passengers will receive all the necessary information, namely, bus timetables, actual weather data, air pollution degree, bus location, bus departure time,” Orlov said. “There is a great opportunity to plan the day by using a smartphone. Moreover, the same information will be available on the information boards."
“From the point of view of traffic management, the company is creating an interesting concept by linking several subsystems, for example, the monitoring and admission systems for transport to the bus terminal,” the regional director said.
“We linked the admission system with video analytics to obtain permission for buses to enter and park,” Orlov said. “We linked the parking space to a smart lighting system. In the evening we can see how the bus drives in and the way for choosing parking space will be lightened for the bus.”
“The lighting is ensured through LED lamps at the bus terminal,” the regional director said. “It is possible to control the system, reduce the brightness of the light, which leads to the saving of energy. Depending on the brightness, the lamps may automatically reduce the light intensity by saving electricity."
The Smart City project was aimed at introducing various information technologies in the development of certain sectors, namely, transport, energy, education, etc. The pilot projects have been implemented as part of this project.
