The head of Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration and the secretary general of IRU, the world road transport organization, explored ways to facilitate transit of goods between Iran and Europe.
During a meeting on Tuesday, Foroud Asgari and Umberto de Pretto discussed ways to enhance their customs cooperation and pave the way for transit of goods between Iran and Europe, IRIB news agency reported on July 18.
They also exchanged views about the Electronic TIR Convention—the Convention on International Transport of Goods Under Cover of TIR Carnets, as the International North-South Transport Corridor can connect east to the west.
China, India, and Pakistan could also join and this way Iran-Europe customs cooperation can expand, the report added.
During the meeting, Asgari pointed to his recent visit to Azerbaijan and said, “With Azerbaijan’s linking to India via Iran, we will make the corridor operational”.
He added that Electronic connection has been established between the customs administrations of Iran and Pakistan and we are in talks to get connected to Azerbaijan electrically as well.
E-TIR system allows countries to have access to all related information at any time, and view the information of the cargo before delivery which is useful for both sides and decreases the risk of deception, accelerates customs formalities and reduces the costs.
The TIR system not only covers customs transit by road but a combination is possible with other modes of transport (rail, inland waterway, and even maritime transport), as long as at least one part of the total transport is made by road.
