BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 1. The construction of the railway infrastructure between Iran and Iraq will begin soon, Deputy Minister for Roads and Urban Development of Iran, Chairman of the Board and President of the Railways of Iran (RAI) Jabbar Ali Zakeri told reporters, Trend reports.
According to him, the Iranian side is working on three areas within the framework of the Iran-Iraq railroad project.
Zakeri said that demining work will be completed in the direction of the Shalamcheh-Basra railway line between Iran and Iraq within the next 10 days. More than 11,000 different types of explosives have been detected and destroyed along the 10 km long route in the mentioned direction.
The deputy minister said that after 10 days, Iraq will continue the construction of the railway line in its territory.
Shalamcheh settlement of Khorramshahr сounty of the Khuzestan Province, located in the southwest of Iran, is located on the border with Iraq. The length of the railway line from this settlement to the Iraqi city of Basra will be approximately 32 km. Part of the railway line passes over the Arvand River, and it is planned to build an 800-meter-long bridge over the river.
The Iranian side states that with the commissioning of the Shalamcheh-Basra railway line, it will be possible to transport 8-10 million tons of cargo and about 12 million passengers per year.
