A contract has been signed with the winner of an international tender announced for the construction of a 13-kilometer section of the Kvesheti-Kobi road in Georgia, Trend reports citing the Georgian Department of Roads.
The Chinese company China Railway 23rd Bureau Group Co Ltd, which won the tender, will build the new road.
The agreement was signed by Alexander Tevdoradze, Deputy Chairman of the Roads Department of Highways of Georgia, and the Chinese side.
The cost of the Kvesheti-Kobe bypass project is estimated at $558.6 million.
The Asian Development Bank allocated a loan of $415 million to Georgia for the construction of the Kvesheti-Kobi road. The Asian Development Bank emphasizes that this is the first project in the framework of the rehabilitation of the North – South transport corridor, which is a vital transit route for Georgia.
Co-financing in the amount of $60 million will come from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. Another $83.6 million will be allocated by the Georgian government.
The Kvesheti-Kobi road will allow locals, tourists and trucks to move more safely and quickly. The Kvesheti-Kobi road will pass through the new route through the Hada Valley. The site will include the longest tunnel in Georgia (9 km) and a modern arch bridge over the Khadistskali river. In addition, four more tunnels and five small bridges will be placed on the road.
