Uzbekistan’s government has banned the import of raw flour and salt from April 1, 2020, as was approved by the decree of the Cabinet of Ministers, Trend reports referring to the National Database of Uzbekistan’s Legislation.
Starting April 1, only grade I wheat flour and table salt enriched with micronutrients can be imported into Uzbekistan.
The restriction on the import of non-fortified flour into the country was planned by the Concept for the prevention of non-communicable diseases, support for a healthy lifestyle and increase the level of physical activity of the population for 2019-2022.
According to the data contained therein, the level of flour fortification with micronutrients is 30 percent of the total volume of produced and imported flour of all varieties. Fortified flour is consumed by about 56 percent of the population, and for the prevention of iron deficiency anemia, this figure must be increased to 90 percent.
First grade wheat flour and salt in Uzbekistan have been produced and sold only in micronutrient-fortified form since January 2011.
