Special Semipalatinsk nuclear safety zone will be created in Kazakhstan on the territory of the former Semipalatinsk test site in Semey city, Trend reports with reference to the Ministry of Energy of Kazakhstan.
Thus, draft laws ‘On the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Safety Zone’ and ‘On Amendments and Additions to Some Legislative Acts of Kazakhstan on the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Safety Zone’ were developed.
The purpose of adopting the draft law is to ensure radiation and environmental safety in the contaminated areas of the former Semipalatinsk test site and adjacent lands, to rehabilitate the territory, and strengthen state control over the use of nuclear waste dumps.
In addition to the creation of the Semipalatinsk nuclear safety zone, the law draft also oversees:
- Limiting the spread of radioactive contamination;
- Rehabilitation of the territory of Semipalatinsk nuclear safety zone by collection, placement, and disposal of generated radioactive waste on the territory of the test site;
- Continuous monitoring of the level of radioactive contamination on the territory of Semipalatinsk nuclear safety.
The bills have passed through scientific, legal, environmental, and economic expertise.
