BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 27. The volume of sprats caught by Iran in the Caspian Sea decreased by 12 percent in the 4th month of the current Iranian year (June 22 through July 22, 2023), compared to the same month in the last year, Deputy Chairman of Iran Fisheries Organization Reza Abbaspour Naderi said, Trend reports.
According to Abbaspour Naderi, Iran caught a total of 843 tons of sprats in the Caspian Sea for the fourth month.
The deputy added that sprat fishing was 511 tons in the Mazandaran Province basin of the Caspian Sea and 332 tons in the Gilan Province basin. In the mentioned provinces, 70 ships were engaged in sprat fishing.
He also pointed out that more than 90 percent of the sprats caught in the Caspian Sea in Iran are used for the production of fish powder.
Sprat is nutritionally more important than many bony fish. However, due to the ignorance of people in Iran, most of the caught sprat is turned into fish powder.
In order to protect the stock of sprat in the Caspian Sea, it is not caught from the Caspian Sea in the spring.
