BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan, August 7. More than 50 percent of the modernization work on the hydraulic unit No. 1 at the Toktogul hydropower plant in Kyrgyzstan has been completed, Trend reports.

According to the Kyrgyz Ministry of Energy, five months into the reconstruction project, the hydraulic unit No. 1 and its auxiliary systems have been fully dismantled.

Preparatory work and turbine installation are complete, while current efforts focus on assembling the generator, installing new 15.75 kV busbars and cable trays, and setting up various system panels. The installation of cooling system pipelines and fire protection components is underway, along with the new regulation system and associated pipelines.

Energy officials are working to complete the rehabilitation by the start of the autumn-winter season.

The modernization project aims to extend the operational life of the hydropower plant and increase its capacity by replacing outdated equipment. Once the upgrades are finished, an additional 60 MW will be added to the plant’s total capacity, ensuring a reliable and sustainable power supply during the colder months.

Currently, Toktogul HPP operates with four hydraulic units, with a total capacity of 1,320 MW. In March 2021, Unit No. 4 (300 MW) underwent reconstruction, increasing its capacity to 360 MW by December 2022. Reconstruction of Unit No. 2 (360 MW) was completed in 2023.
