In the current fishing season, the amount of fish caught by Iranian fishermen in the Caspian Sea increased by about 44 percent compared to the previous season, Mukhtar Akhoundi, an official with Iran Fisheries Organization, said, Trend reports via the website of Iran's Agricultural Jihad Ministry.
Akhoundi noted that fishing season started on October 7, 2018 and lasted until April 20, 2019.
During the reported period, 15,800 tons of bony fish, including Caspian kutum and carp, he said.
Caspian kutum accounted for 67 percent of the total amount, while 23 percent of the caught fish were mullets and the rest 10 percent fell to the share of other fish, he added.
Mazandaran, Gilan and Gholestan provinces accounted for 58, 37 and 5 percent of the total output of fish caught from the Caspian, he said.
In the last Iranian year (March 21, 2018-March 20, 2019), 26,150 tons of Clupeonella were caught by Iranian fishermen in the Caspian, which is 15 percent more compared to the preceding year, he said.
Akhoundi further noted that up to 35 percent of the caught bony fish were caught illegally, which is a threat to the sea's resources, because illegal fishermen do not comply with set fishing rules.
