Afghanistan has committed to take back shortly its citizens illegally residing in Iran and Pakistan, Iranian Interior Ministry's Migration Service Head Mohammad-Hossein Takhuri said, Radio Payam reported.

This decision was made at a joint meeting of representatives from three countries, Tahuri added.

A total of 2.7 million illegal immigrants lived in Iran until recently, while 1.7 million people have been returned home.

"We are working over returning the remaining one million Afghans back to their country," Tahuri said.

A large number of Afghan civilians are living illegally in neighboring Iran and Pakistan because of a devastating war in the country. They are mostly settled in the border regions of these countries.
