The Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources of Turkey has extended the license for exploration of oil and gas deposits of Turkish Petroleum Corporation (TPAO), the ministry told Trend.
On March 19, 2020, the TPAO applied to renew the license for more two years, said the ministry.
TPAO will conduct oil and gas exploration in Istanbul and Tekirdag province on a total area of 42,150 hectares, noted the energy ministry.
In 2019, exploratory drilling operations were carried out in Turkey to search for raw hydrocarbon, and 5,063 exploration wells were drilled. The total depth of drilled wells amounted to 9.5 million meters.
The TPAO drilled 3,048 exploration wells with a total penetration of over 6.1 million meters.
As many as 104 wells with a total depth of 133,386 meters were drilled by organizations of Turkey’s Mineral Research and Exploration General Directorate (MTA), while other Turkish companies drilled 257 wells with a total penetration of 311, 662 meters.
The foreign companies drilled 1,312 exploratory wells in Turkey in the previous year with a total depth of more than 2.2 million meters, while the joint enterprises and consortiums drilled 342 exploratory wells.
Over 2019, 510 deposits were discovered by TPAO, 8 deposits – by MTA, 24 deposits – by other domestic companies, 306 deposits – by foreign companies, and 93 deposits - by joint consortiums.
In April 2014, a law came into force in Turkey that allowed oil exploration in forests and national parks.
