ASTANA, Kazakhstan, March 17. Kazakhstan has begun work on determining sites for the construction of the second and third nuclear power plants, Trend reports.
This was noted by Prime Minister of Kazakhstan Olzhas Bektenov
in an article titled "Six Years of Progress: Kazakhstan on the Path
to Sustainable Development."
"At the President's instruction, nuclear energy is being developed.
The location for the first nuclear power plant has been determined.
Work has begun on determining sites for the construction of two
more plants," the government press service reports.
The statement also pointed out that electricity consumption in Kazakhstan has shot up by 14 percent since 2019, hitting the mark at around 120 billion kWh. With the population booming and the wheels of industry turning alongside the digital revolution, it’s a safe bet that energy consumption is set to soar even higher.
On October 6, 2024, Kazakhstan held a referendum on the construction of nuclear power plants in the country. 71.12 percent of Kazakhstani citizens voted in favor. Voter turnout was 63.66 percent.
