The construction of Fajr-2 petrochemical unit, located in the souther province of Khuzestan, is nearly complete, Fajr Petrochemical Company's managing director said on Tuesday.

The unit will officially come on stream by April at the cost of 2,455 billion rials (some $200 million based on the official rate of USD) and 334 million euros, the IRNA news agency quoted Hossein Shahriari as saying.

Some 720 billion rials (some $58.7) and 211 million euros were also invested in the unit's gas plant and power transmission lines, he added.

The construction of the unit started in 2003, with the goal of providing petrochemical complexes in the region with utilities such as electricity, steam, cooling tower water, service water, desalinated water, nitrogen, and oxygen.

The managing director of the National Petrochemical Company of Iran said last month that once all the Mehre Mandegar projects in the petrochemical sector come on stream, 12 million tons would be added to the country's petrochemical production capacity.

By implementation of the mentioned projects, Iran's petrochemical production capacity would reach 66 million tons, the IRNA News Agency quoted Abdolhossein Bayat as saying.

Bayat went on to note that 20 Mehre Mandegar projects are underway in the petrochemical sector of which six projects have made progress between 90 to 99 percent while the other 11 projects' progress stand at 50 to 80 percent.

According to the Iranian Oil Minister Rostam Qasemi, the country plans to build 70 new petrochemical production units.

Once all the units come on stream the nation's installed petrochemical production capacity would reach 100 million tons, he said.

Petrochemical sector is one of the most profitable industries of Iran and we can guarantee a 30-percent interest to the investors, Qasemi added.

According to the minister, the country's installed petrochemical production capacity is currently about 54 million tons.

Iran's total petrochemical products output stood at 27.4 million tons in the first eight months of current Iranian calendar year, which began March 20.
