Turkey will increase the total installed capacity of its power plants to 4,000 megawatt in 2015, Anadolu agency reported on Apr.6 citing the country's Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Taner Yildiz.
He said it is planned to bring the total installed capacity of the country's hydro power plants to 1,500 megawatt, wind farms - 800 megawatt, thermal power plants running on gas and coal - 1,700 megawatt.
Power plants in Turkey generate 47 percent of electricity by using the gas imported from other countries (mainly from Russia), while around 28 percent of electricity is generated by using local and imported coal.
The hydro power plants account for only 18 percent of electricity generated in Turkey. The remaining seven percent of electricity is generated by the wind farms in the country.
Moreover, Turkey imports electricity from Bulgaria, Greece, the Czech Republic and Iran.
Earlier, Yildiz said that if needed, Turkey can import electricity from Georgia as well.
Electricity consumption in Turkey increased by 63 percent and stood at 1.398 billion kilowatt hours in Jan.-Feb. 2015, according to the country's Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources.
Electricity import in these two months cost Turkey $110 million, which is a quite high figure.
