BAKU, Azerbaijan, Sept. 17
By Fakhri Vakilov – Trend:
Uzbekistan ranked fifth in the world in terms of the amount of uranium mined in 2020, Trend reports citing a report from the World Nuclear Association (WNA).
Moreover, Uzbekistan was the only country in the top five that did not cut production.
During the year, the country produced 3,500 tons of uranium - the same as in 2019. Separately, it is noted that Uzbekistan at the moment practically does not use uranium in its economy and exports everything mined abroad.
The first place, as in the previous year, was taken by Kazakhstan – 19,480 tons of uranium were mined there. In second place, with a large lag, is Australia with 6,200 tons. Furthremore, the top five uranium miners included Namibia (5,410 tons) and Canada (3,880 tons).
Production in all four countries has declined due to the restrictions associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the depletion of the Ranger field in Australia.
In total, 47,730 tons of uranium were mined in the world last year, which is 13 percent less than in 2019.
Earlier, Spot reported on a reduction in the supply of Uzbek uranium to the United States. Spot also published analytics on uranium mining in Uzbekistan and its marketing to other countries.
