The World Bank (WB) has approved a $12-billion project to help poor countries purchase vaccines, tests and treatments to combat the COVID-19 pandemic, Trend reports referring to a source in the WB.
According to the source, the first bank-financed operation to support the introduction of vaccines was approved back in January 2021.
The source noted that as of April 16, the World Bank approved the vaccination projects in 17 countries worth $2 billion, and by the middle of this year the bank plans to cover 50 countries with funding of $4 billion.
Countries with currently approved vaccination projects include Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Honduras, Cape Verde, Ivory Coast, Lebanon, Mongolia, Nepal, Rwanda, Gambia, Tunisia, Tajikistan, El Salvador, Tunisia, Philippines, Ecuador and Ethiopia.
Earlier, the World Bank stated that it could provide support to Azerbaijan in the fight against the pandemic within the Azerbaijan COVID-19 Emergency Response Project. The WB is planning to fund $95 million for the implementation of this project, and it has expressed its readiness to potentially cooperate with the Azerbaijani government in order to agree on the details of the project.
