Azerbaijan cuts wheat imports in 2023

BAKU, Azerbaijan, January 23. Azerbaijan imported 1.1 million tons of wheat in 2023, which is 9.1 percent (117,655 tons) less than in 2022, Trend reports.

According to Azerbaijan's State Customs Committee, wheat imports topped $303.9 million in value (a 30.37 percent or $132.5 million reduction year on year).

Wheat imports accounted for 1.76 percent of all Azerbaijani imports during the reporting period.

Meanwhile, in 2023, Azerbaijan's food imports fell 8.59 percent ($202.9 million) to $2.16 billion.

It is worth noting that Azerbaijan's foreign trade turnover in 2023 fell by 2.85 percent, or $1.502 billion, from $52.6 billion in 2022 to $51.1 billion.

In the structure of foreign trade turnover, exports accounted for $33.898 billion, which is $4.2 billion, or 11.14 percent, less than the same period last year. The share of exports in the foreign trade turnover amounted to 66.23 percent, up from 72.4 percent a year earlier.

Azerbaijan's imports in the reporting period grew by $2.745 billion, or 18.88 percent, year-on-year from $14.5 billion to around $17.2 billion. The share of imports in the foreign trade turnover amounted to 33.77 percent, up from 27.6 percent a year earlier.

As a result, during the period under review, the foreign trade balance, while remaining positive, declined year-on-year by over $6.9 billion, or 29.63 percent, to $16.6 billion against $23.6 billion in 2022.
