ASTANA, Kazakhstan, February 3. Kazakhstan has developed its own geodetic coordinate system with a network of continuously operating reference stations following the audit of the Supreme Audit Chamber of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Trend reports.
Upon the recommendation of the Audit Chamber, the Government of Kazakhstan has implemented the "National Infrastructure of Spatial Data" project, aimed at ensuring the country's self-sufficiency in the field of geodesy and cartography.
During a previous state audit of land resource management, geodesy, and cartography, it was found that Kazakhstan lacked its own geodetic coordinate system, which hindered the creation of a unified digital cartographic ecosystem.
At the time of the audit, a coordinate system, elevation, gravimetric, and satellite measurement system that was established in the mid-20th century was being used. Nowadays, this system is both technically and morally outdated.
In this regard, the Audit Chamber recommended that the Government take immediate measures to establish its own geodetic coordinate system and create a satellite geodetic network.
To address this, the Ministry of Digital Development, Innovation, and Aerospace Industry has successfully completed the large-scale budget investment project "National Infrastructure of Spatial Data." As of now, all planned tasks have been fully completed.
Thus, the information system "State Geoportal of the National Infrastructure of Spatial Data" has been put into industrial operation. This tool provides government agencies and other stakeholders with access to current and accurate spatial data necessary for effective land management.
To note, since January 1, 2025, the modern state coordinate system QazTRF-23 (Qazaqstan Terrestrial Reference Frame 2023) and a network of continuously operating reference stations (CORS) have been launched. The newly created coordinate system will ensure high-quality geodetic and cartographic data, as well as serve as the foundation for further development of the spatial data infrastructure in Kazakhstan.
Additionally, thanks to the implementation of QazTRF-23, the accuracy of geodetic measurements will significantly increase, opening up broad prospects for the state in the fields of territorial planning, construction, and the creation of modern data management systems.
