BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 15. The construction of the Horadiz-Jabrayil-Zangilan-Aghband highway (Zangezur corridor) is 93 percent completed, Trend reports via the State Agency of Azerbaijan Automobile Roads.
The agency said that the highway, the foundation for which was laid by the presidents of Azerbaijan and Türkiye, is a strategically significant project that contributes to the establishment of new economic, transport, and communication connections in the region.
The technical specifications of the Zangezur corridor project ensure the road's construction with high quality and in accordance with modern standards. The total length of the highway is 149.9 km, with the main road being 123.6 km. The technical grade of the road is 1B, which allows for high speed and safe movement. The road's width varies between 14 and 21 meters, with the embankment width ranging from 21.5 to 29.5 meters, and the number of traffic lanes varying from four to six. This design ensures smooth and safe traffic flow.
As part of the project, 261 pipes (16,814 meters), 55 underpasses (3,781 meters), and 28 bridges (2,090 meters) are being constructed. Additionally, three tunnels are being built, with a total length of 12,032 meters.
The materials and techniques used in the road's construction are of high quality. The embankment works, leveling layers, and both the sub-base and top layers have already been completed for a significant portion of the road. As of now, 950,000 m³ of asphalt work has been completed, and the volume of earthworks stands at 61.6 million m³, which are key factors that ensure the road’s durability and longevity.
An essential component of the Zangezur corridor construction is the tunnels. Significant progress has been made in the tunnel construction, with excavation and shotcrete works completed in the three tunnels, referred to as T1, T2, and T3.
A total of 28 bridges will be built, 16 of which are water bridges and 12 are road bridges. The construction of 19 bridges has been completed, while work on eight bridges is ongoing.
Additionally, the construction of 258 circular and 42 rectangular pipes, as well as underpasses, has been finalized.
The construction of the Horadiz-Jabrayil-Zangilan-Aghband highway is one of the significant steps taken by Azerbaijan in the field of infrastructure.
This highway, which is part of the Hajigabul-Horadiz-Aghband-Zangezur corridor main highway, plays a crucial role in connecting other regions of Azerbaijan to the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.
The construction of the Zangezur corridor is not only an infrastructure project but also an essential part of regional integration. This road will not only strengthen the transportation system but also serve as a vital tool for accelerating the economic development of the region and strengthening strategic ties. With 93 percent of the work completed, the full opening of this project in the near future will open new horizons for the region.
